The ELITE VRLA battery range is available from 5AH (amp hour) up to 3000AH in 2, 6, and 12-volt versions. This battery is a high-rate battery designed to give ultimate performance in a particular size housing rather than cycle life.
It is available in a 3 to 5-year design life battery from 5AH up to 33AH with a cycle life expectancy of 50 to 150 discharges or, alternatively, in a 10-year design life battery from 40AH up to 3000AH with a cycle life expectancy of 150 to 300 discharges.
The ELITE Lead carbon battery is available in a 12-volt 50AH or 100AH block and is suitable for cycling applications such as regular load shedding, solar, and off-site inverter applications. The lead-carbon battery can also be used in a UPS system which is subject to daily cycling, provided the UPS has the correct recharge voltage and current abilities to recharge the battery before the next discharge. The lead-carbon is a high-cycle battery offering over 2000 discharges in its service life.

The heart of any uninterruptable power supply system is its battery. Without a battery, a UPS can’tperform one of its key functions, which is to keep the load up and running when the power goes off. This makes the battery a critical path single point of failure in a UPS system, and thus it is very important to ensure that the battery is kept at optimal performance at all times under the most ideal operational environment. To keep this consumable product at optimum means:
- Proper sizing according to the application for float or cyclic discharging.
- 20 to 22 degrees Celsius operating environment all the time.
- Regular preventative battery maintenance.
- Sufficient air movement around the cells for efficient cooling.
- Regular battery cell impedance measurement to try to predict any signs of failure to replace before failure and prevent inverter load disruptions.
- An effective battery monitoring system for 24/7 monitoring of all cells connected to your UPS.
Some UPS battery technologies can operate at much higher and lower temperatures than a standard lead-acid battery vented or sealed or semi-sealed type technology. For example, a nickel-cadmium and lithium battery (Lithium Ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate LiPHO4) can operate at up to 50 degrees Celsius provided the temperature is again calculated into the UPS system design and type of application, be it occasionally used in conjunction with a standby generator set or cycle discharge.
It is important to note that a VRLA battery will offer reduced performance at temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius and accelerated performance with much-reduced service life in the field at temperatures above 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.
