How does an uninterruptible power supply or UPS system work? What is a UPS?

1. A rectifier input section to convert mains supply power (AC) into battery power (DC)
2. An inverter output section which converts battery power (DC) into mains supply power (AC) for the connected load
3. An electronic bypass switch which connects the ESKOM AC input to the load AC output in case there is a problem with the UPS so the load keeps operating on ESKOM then.
4. Electronic control circuits to coordinate items 1 to 3 above also called the power electronics and ensure they work together as a system.
5. A backup battery that sits between item 1 and 2 so that when EKOM fails the battery instantaneously feeds the inverter and hence the connected load with power without any break, making power supply to the UPS load ”uninterrupted”.
