What is the difference between a UPS warranty and a preventative maintenance agreement?

When it comes to a new UPS unit, the warranty offered by the manufacturer gives the user the assurance that the system is covered against the manufacturer’s defects for a period of between 12 and 24 months from the date of purchase. This date can be extended up to 5 years due to the reliability of the Riello UPS system, which is 100% designed and manufactured in Italy.

On the other hand, a preventative maintenance agreement offers the UPS user the peace of mind that in the event of a UPS needing repair should it fail, the supplier will guarantee an immediate response and despatch technicians and UPS spare parts. These actions ensure minimum load downtime or risk of effect due to power failures and bad quality grid power supply.

An uninterruptable power supply unit is a diverse mix of numerous electronics and power components, including consumable items of various service life expectancies such as batteries, cooling fans, and capacitors. In conjunction with preventative maintenance agreements, the UPS factory warranty will reduce the risk to the critical inverter load with maximum load up time.

Generally speaking, all plug-and-play UPS units up to and including 3 kVA will be sold with an ex works manufacturer’s warranty. Hard wired UPS systems from 4 kVA up to 6,4 MVA will be covered in terms of an on-site warranty with a response time usually of the next business day, while in some cases, for example, data centres, the warranty support will be 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Generally speaking, a UPS preventative maintenance plan will include for a guaranteed response from the manufacturer within an agreed response time, as well as frequent and set service intervals of between 2 and 4 times per annum for inverter, rectifier, fan, capacitor, and battery checks and measurements, as well as any firmware or software upgrades needed to ensure optimum system performance.

Whether an uninterruptable power supply unit is under warranty or not, a preventative maintenance agreement will cover the system under both conditions.
