UPS or uninterruptible power supply

UPS or uninterruptible power supply, is a power supply that includes a battery to maintain power in the event of a power outage. Typically, a UPS keeps a computer, plant or electrical equipment running for several minutes or hours after a power outage.

A UPS is typically used to protect hardware such as computers, data centres, telecommunication equipment or other electrical equipment where an unexpected power disruption could cause injuries, fatalities, serious business disruption or data loss. UPS units range in size from units designed to protect a single computer without a video monitor (around 200 volt-ampere rating) to large units powering entire data centres or buildings.

UPS or uninterruptible power supply – Usage

  • Industrial Machinery – ( handle surges in power requirements due to peak demands caused by starting machinery, switching power supplies, etc. )
  • Banking – ( In order to run smooth operations in services sectors such as banking )
  • Marine – ( often used when on board generators fail )
  • healthcare – ( protect and manage power within a facility – so staff can focus on delivering quality care )
  • Telecommunications – ( keeping the telecommunications systems running, an adequate and responsive backup power supply is an essential part of corporate operations )

Its almost unimaginable operating just about any industry without a UPS or uninterruptible power supply in South Africa. Almost daily rolling Blackouts ( load shedding ) is a reality, planning for this eventuality is essential, we StandbySystems have the expertise to help you choose and set up the most suited UPS.

Eskom calls on consumers to urgently switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances this morning to prevent the need for rotational load shedding.
